2005 SKI MOVIE REVIEWS: Don’t Get Mad…Get Rad

Safety Meeting – Theory-3 Media
Theory-3.com
Length: 35 minutes
Cost: $20
Medium: Digital video

The intro to this Northwest-based film is abrasive. Seventies porno style and a cheesy cop theme are more than a little played-out. But Theory-3 makes up for it right away with some of the best amateur performances on film this year. Justin Dorey, Riley Leboe, Joe Schuster, and many more turn in solid performances. James Heim leads off the skiing with some gnarly big mountain ripping. Charles Grant follows suit, landing a cab nine on his first try over Mt. Baker’s Home Run Gap and showing plenty of style on the urban kinks. The soundtrack is fun, and a great mix of solid big mountain skiing, tons of killer newschool footage, and some great editing effects put Theory 3 Media on the map. If you can put the intro behind you, check out Justin Dorey’s breakthrough segment as film-closer. Reminiscent of TJ Schiller, Dorey and Safety Meeting are just a taste of what’s to come from Theory 3 as the most recent addition to Poor Boyz Productions.

Wild Life - Yellow Snow Productions
www.yspfilms.com
Length: 40 minutes
Cost: $10
Medium: Digital video

New filmers at Yellow Snow Productions present several underground freestylers in their second film, Wild Life. Young Colby West’s competition 1260 came as a welcome surprise. If that’s looks too hucked, watch him effortlessly dominate every rail and backcountry booter laid in front of him. Corey Vanular also turns in a solid segment. Aside from that, don’t look for top-notch production, film, and editing quality in this low-budget film. Or an abundance of quality skiing, for that matter. There are too many 5-foot pipe airs and small resort tables that might make a good sponsor-me film, but just aren’t prime time. You may list a lot of things you aren’t blown away with in this film, but if you have ten bucks and the fridge is already full of beer, it’s not a bad way to spend an hour. Other wise, buy a twelver of PBR and borrow your friend’s copy.
