The problem with the Outdoor Retailer in the summer, is well, it’s to preview summer products. So why would a winter magazine, go to a summer show? “You do realize it’s summer,” this exhibitor and that retailer pointed out, as if we didn’t realize it was 105 degrees outside the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. But inside, it felt more like a micro winter wonderland with the AC cranked and the temp hovering around freezing. So instead of letting the minor point of a summer trade show dissuade U.S. Ski Teamer Caitlin Ciccone and I from finding the coolest of cool new gear, it motivated us to hunt for that random stuff that just might make it into a skier’s winter wardrobe, gear stash, and/or backpack. Let’s see: collar lamps for dogs, turkey ball energy food, shoes with gills, and lots of toys. Welcome to our adventure …
Flybar
The two-day search began with a good pounce on the pogo stick outside of the palace. This isn’t just any stick, but one that can go about 4 feet in the air (the Flybar 800). The Flybar 1200 can go 7 feet. Ciccone, known to give anything a try, tried and ate it, that’s right – pogo to the shin, ass on the ground. “This is hard,” she said after attempting a trick called the “eagle.” “This would be great for cross training.” Flybar.com

Remo
Ciccone was on a personal mission to find a travel toy – specifically the African Djembe drum – to take on the World Cup this season. One year it was crocheting for the 22 year old, this year it’s drum beating. We found the booth crammed in the kayak section, and then we jammed out with the exhibitors. Ciccone plans to either annoy her teammates with the drum and/or create a rockin’ band. It likely depends on her skill, which clearly was in the works. remo.com.

GoPro
Annoying head cams are a thing of the past with this new setup. The entire contraption comes in a tiny, cordless box that can attach seamlessly to any helmet or wrist. It takes a 3 mega pixel shot and 56 minutes of video … blah blah blah. “I was thinking about bringing that to the bar with me,” Ciccone said. “If you wear it around on your wrists, you are bound to get some good pictures and video. And you don’t have to think about losing a camera.” goprocamera.com.

Pistil
The hat brand based in Hood River, Oregon, has a few fall lifestyle hats that befit any going-out occasion. Ciccone dug the hippie-esque O-grove “Ohmygod, I loved it, it was just a cool hat. I’m not a hippie at all but I like hippie hats. It brings me back to my Franconia Notch roots.” pistildesigns.com
