PATAGONIA FJORD FLANNEL $88
[800.638.6464; Patagonia.com]
I’m from the Pacific Northwest, so I grew up listening to the Seattle Sound and wearing flannel. I also like layering with flannel when I ski. Plus, it’s warm, soft, and cozy post-ski in the bar, chopping wood, or tuning skis in cold basements and garages.
BLACK DIAMOND SABRETOOTH PRO $160
[801.278.5552; blackdiamondequipment.com]
These things look menacing and ready for technical ascents. Since I am not a bona fide ski mountaineer, I wanted a versatile and relatively light crampon and the Sabretooth fits the bill. The Pro version comes with toe welts that fit perfectly on my boots.
K2 PONTOON $1,000
[800.972.4063; k2skis.com]
Last year atop Teton Pass, three inches of new snow sat on a manky, crusty layer. I opted to try the ’Toons (160-130-120) in a 189 and my ensuing descent down Glory Bowl is forever etched in my memory. The real secret lies in the tapered tail allowing you to be able to sink the tail for shutting down speed while the early-rise tip and massive shovel dominate any condition. Power slides and slashes have never been easier or more fun.
