VOLKL KATANA $975
[603.298.0314; volkl.com]
Fat skis for happy days. I don’t recommend these for groomed slopes, but they are genius in powder—where you should be. A heavy ski, it’s good practice for the legs when you are hiking up along with all your camera gear.

APPLE 15-INCH MACBOOK PRO 2.4GHZ $2,500
[800.692.7753; apple.com]
This beauty and beast replaced my Commodore 64: way faster and more portable. The 15-inch screen is a decent size for previewing digital shots, watching movies, and e-mailing when it’s raining outside.

LACIE RUGGED ALL-TERRAIN HARD DISK 160GB $220
[503.844.4500; lacie.com]
I carry two of these for private stuff and backing up images. I try to keep my laptop uncluttered, so I can fill it up with images. I’m always hiding and moving these when I get struck by paranoia and think I’m going to lose them or my laptop.

LINHOF LARGE FORMAT TECHNIKA IV $1000ish (used)
[linhof.de]
It’s like walking around owning your own tank. This heavy piece of equipment is true German precision art. I screwed up a part of my 50-year-old camera—which is really hard to do, but I managed—then ordered a new spare part from the newer models and they are still the same. It just fit. The camera was already a complete masterpiece then and still is now. Rise, fall, tilt, shift and swing away beyond the digital small format camera world.

NIKON D2X $4,500
[800.645.6687; nikonusa.com]
Nikon or Canon? Canon or Nikon? I get asked this question often. It’s not the brand, it’s your brain. One year Canon has the best model out and the next it’s Nikon’s turn. Just go with one and stick to it.
