2003 Photo of the Year

2003 Photo of the Year - Blake Jorgenson

Is the eagle landing on a Whistler backcountry moonscape, or is it Blake Jorgenson landing the 2003 Powder Magazine Photo of the Year Award? Jorgenson produced this haunting image of Mike Douglas toying with gravity using a Nikon F5 with an 80-200 F2.8 lens and Ilford Delta 400 pro film. He used this rich, black-and-white film because of the extremely bright conditions that April morning. "I knew I would be able to bring out the depth of the terrain as well as the texture of the snow with a handmade print, rather than on a color slide," As any fan of MSP's The Front Line will confirm, the Godfather stuck the corked 720 safety grab on his first attempt.

Runners up:

2003 Runner Up - Tony Harrington

Tony Harrington's image of Camille Jaccoux in the Chamonix backcountry came a close second. Tony used a medium format panoramic camera in order to freeze this amazing moment in time.

This picture of Seth Morrison in the midst of another Lincoln loop is thanks to the wizardry of Paul Morrison. The Morrisons teamed up in Tulsequah, British Columbia, where Paul used his Canon EOS 1V camera with a 100-400 zoom to stop Seth in flight.

A Scala Agfa black-and-white film was used by Christian Pondella to capture this Dan Molnar face shot in Mammoth. Clearly Pondella is a professional; only a pro would have the patience to create this kind of quality on such a deep day.

Andrew McGarry shot from a helicopter to record this documentation of the run that earned Kent Kreitler the award for Best Line at the 2003 Powder Video Awards.
