SNOWJAM: Salt Lake City ushers in winter with downtown rager

I don’t know which of the Metal Gods (CLICK HERE FOR THE VIDEO) last two songs was more fitting: Def Leopard’s Pour Some Sugar on Me or Ozzie’s Crazy Train. Thousands of snow fiends braved foul weather and descended upon the Gallivan Center in hopes of enticing the skies to dump white powder on the surrounding peaks. And after hearing reports of early-season dumps in Colorado, there is little question that some in attendance were going off the rails waiting for the Wasatch to get their share.

Hosted by Ski Utah, and supported by a number of local and national sponsors, the 2006 Snow Jam was the first of what organizers hope will become an annual pray for snow bender. “There are a lot of great season ending parties, whistler, Vail, etc,” says Adam Comey of Mountain Sports International, promoters of the event. "But here in Utah with 13 amazing resorts clustered so close and some of the best snow in the world, we saw an opportunity to gather skiers and riders of all ages and celebrate the beginning of another amazing winter." Next year, organizers expect the event to grow to include more bands and a rail jam.

Faux hair band, The Metal Gods (formerly known as Danger Kitty, for those of you who remember the old Discover Card ad), headlined the event with their signature covers of ’80s heavy metal classics, while footage shot in the local mountains played on two big screens lining the stage. The event also featured a Utah photo contest, which Lee Cohen won with a shot of Jeff Whithey ripping deep powder. But the highlight for many was an autograph tent featuring over a dozen local athletes, such as Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Grete Eliassen. The tent was packed throughout the night, with an hour and a half wait at times. -Derek Taylor
