SKIING, SUN AND SKIN: Advice From a Dermatologist

We all know about protecting our skin from the summer sun, but our face and body are just as vulnerable to winter weather. Men and women should practice a few simple skin care tips that protect and repair winter skin.

Q: Why does my skin start to get itchy when winter rolls around?

A: Skin gets drier in the winter. Less humidity and windy conditions suck the moisture out of our skin, leaving it dry and itchy. Plus, we spend more time indoors, with dry heat. All of this can leave your skin dry, itchy, and aggravated.

Helpful tip: Rub on body lotion or body oil immediately after your shower to help seal in your skin’s natural oils.

Q: Can I use the same type of moisturizer all year round?

A: In the winter, you would probably benefit from switching to a more emollient (soothing) moisturizer. If your skin is generally normal-dry, look for a heavier winter night cream like Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream or Vivite’s Night Renewal Facial Cream. If you’re more oily or acne-prone, look for a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid to help lock in moisture without clogging pores like MD Forte’s Hydrating Complex Cream or Neutrogena Healthy Skin Night Cream.

Q: What can I do to keep my hands and feet looking good in the winter?

Q: Is it alright to skimp a little on the sunscreen during the winter months?

At high altitudes, you’re closer to the sun, with less protection from the atmosphere. Plus, snow can reflect up to 80% of the UV rays…so you’re getting a double dose of sun. You might not need as much sunscreen on your body, but be sure to apply sunscreen on your face and hands, which are more exposed, even in the winter. If you’re spending the day skiing or snowboarding, remember that sunscreen gets rubbed off on your gear/hat/goggles, plus it comes off if you’re sweating. So remember to re-apply sunscreen at lunch and 2-3 times a day on your face.

Q: I’m exposed to the elements a lot. What can I do to protect my skin from the sun and wind besides using sunscreen?

A: Sun and wind take their toll on your skin – over time, they break down the collagen (protein substance) in your skin, leading to fine lines and wrinkles.
