Why was there a need for such a film in the industry?
I always like anything that’s different. The athletes thought there was a need. They asked me to work on the project. Pollard and Pep saw the need over the years, ‘I’m putting my life into it, my ski career could end, I could die,’ or a shot was missed, a song was put over that they don’t like, that doesn’t represent them. All these things accumulate, and it’s like ‘Man why don’t I do this myself?’ It comes down to the athletes finally being in a position to able to do it on their own.
How have these athletes helped to fulfill the goals of the film?
I think it’s the only crew. At first I was kind of like, ‘Oh man, they’re so different.’ Every one is so individual – but so the same. Everyone has respect for each other. They listen to what everybody has to say. If they are looking at a line they‘ll listen to each other, ‘Oh, you can do that.’ Because there’s only three and they just want to do something new, that feels good, that’s fun everyday. So this is the ideal crew for sure.
Does this movie’s format represent the direction of ski films?
If you look at films like The Bigger Picture, more and more storylines are evolving in ski films. Because people are realizing that we live these awesome stories every year – and people are trying to tell it. So I think you will see the evolution of ski movies to be a story based thing, because we put way too much time and energy into it to not tell the story of the lives we live.
