It's fitting that one of the premier action sports film production companies calls Crested Butte, Colorado, home with such strikingly big terrain engulfing the valley. Matchstick Production founders Murray Wais and Steve Winter settled in Crested Butte in the early-'90s, where they produced their first film, Soul Sessions and Epic Impressions, starring Seth Morrison, whose skills mirrored the raucous terrain.
One of MSP's current film stars, Rory Bushfield, has been holed up in CB for nearly a month now working as hard as ever to acquire enough quality footage for a segment in next year’s film. Unfortunately, Rory is scheduled to have knee surgery in late February to repair the damaged cartilage he tore last winter in Whistler. This, of course, has motivated the little kid in Bushy even more to get as much work done and have as much fun as possible before he goes under the knife.
Bushy's been building booters and mini-hits all over town, where he claims to have made "friends" since he’s been there for so long. Following Bushy, at times reluctantly, has been Winter and MSP cinematographer, Steve Reska.
On a sunny morning, I joined the crew for a little film session directly located at the trailhead to Irwin Lodge, a Crested Butte backcountry hotspot. Bushfield sculpted the wide kicker a few days prior, so we worked on smoothing out the in-run as Winter and Reska set up their Super 16mm and HD cameras, respectively. After shuttling Bushy up to the top of our makeshift in-run, it was go time. He spun natural and unnatural 3s and 7s before Reska and Winter attached a mini-16 to his wrist for a unique P.O.V. shot. The impressive little camera filmed 100 frames per second and had Bushy sweating a little extra in fear of dropping such a prized piece of technology mid-spin.
After declaring they got the shot, the MSP boys wrapped up the mini-set before the super eager Bushfield request their presence at another jump site somewhere in town. It was a quality day out in the sun with the MSP boys while experiencing nostalgic 10-year-old feelings of building jumps and in-runs with good friends.
