THE MAYOR INITIATIVE: Andy chats with two Olympic Medalists

Words and Photos courtesy of Andy Mahre
Dinner… HAHA, not really. But we did introduce him, or her, to Iron Maiden.

There isn’t much of a story left to tell on Mount Hood. The snow is melting. You have to upload the lower chair without your skis (or board) attached to your feet. Some companies are already beginning to pack up their demo shops. This season of The G.C. is nearly coming to an end. Key word: nearly.

I haven’t been spending much time down in The G.C. the last two weeks. Instead, I’ve been home in Yakima, WA, participating in a few old hobbies, or as Pep would say, “Sports.” Getting off the skis and onto a wakeboard or dirt bike is a very nice change in pace; from Government Camp to just straight camping. This makes writing articles around Hood a bit more difficult.

My dad, Steve, recently sold his house. I was helping with the moving process and found a few photos that I thought would be suiting for your viewing pleasure. Of course, I needed more content than just a few old photos, so I talked with my dad and uncle. If you’re not aware of whom they are, I will fill you in quickly. Phil and Steve Mahre: Twin brothers whose most memorable moment of fame would be taking one and two in the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics. The sport? Skiing. Not enough info? Here’s what they are doing today:

S: August 2nd, 2007. Twenty after twelve.

My dad, me, and the Rooster at the White Pass Bantam Cup race circa ’88.

What do you plan to do today?
P: Oh, I'm doing some demolition and reconstruction of Lindsey and Justin's house. (Daughter and son-in-law)
S: Finish moving out of my house. Cleaning, lots of cleaning.

What is your twin brother doing today?
P: I'm going to guess that he is either moving, or working on his new house.
S: Probably waterskiing or something.

Who's the better skier?
P: HAHA, on any given day, one of us will beat the other.
S: It depends on the day.

Speaking of competitiveness, competitions, and sports in general, what others do you do besides skiing?
P: Waterskiing, football, softball, car racing, go-carts.
S: Softball, motocross, basketball, go-carting—I guess you could call that a sport, and car racing.

My dad, me, and the sold house, circa, well…today.
