In order to learn more about an 18-year-old who travels the world seven months out of the year, sometimes it’s best to speak to the people who know him best and keep him grounded—his parents. Rich and Judy Carlson, parents of Winter X Games Slopestyle silver medalist Sammy Carlson, reside in Tigard, Oregon, and are the parents of three kids. The two have been instrumental in Sammy’s rapid rise in the ski world by simply supporting their restless son’s dream. Although they promote having fun and an honest work ethic, Rich and Judy parent the young gun in school, societal pressures, and what foods are suitable for their son to mow down in foreign countries. Sammy’s thoughts on graduating high school, the Winter X Games, China, and hot dogs can all be found in POWDER’s Voice section in the recently released September issue.
POWDER associate editor John Stifter ringed the parents earlier this summer to ask about their precocious son’s off the hill ways and tendencies. Listen in to what Sammy’s mom and dad have to say.
