THE HITCHER: Thumbing it across the heart of Colorado to uncover the depths of ski culture

Words and Photos by Matt Hansen

Urrl, the snow dog of winter, and his owner Dave Renno. I met Dave in the liftline at A-Basin, and he guided me into the Porcupine area out of bounds. It was minus 15 at the summit, but we found a foot of untracked cold smoke in the trees. Dave lived in his van for a winter at Jackson Hole, before moving to Breckenridge a few years ago. Now, his dog lives there while Dave runs the Rado restaurant in downtown Breck. He's the head chef and owner, but says, "I'm just a cook. Just trying to make it like the rest of the guys."
