THE HITCHER: Thumbing it across the heart of Colorado to uncover the depths of ski culture

Words and Photos by Matt Hansen

Heading out of Breck toward Frisco in a storm, I got picked up by a couple and their dog, a black Lab named Juneau. When I climbed into the cold, dark truck bed, Juneau eyed me with tentative eyes and a curious nose. Though she never completely warmed to me, her small grunts revealed a weakness for being scratched behind the ears. I got an important hitching tip from the guy driving: "You gotta get a piece of cardboard and scratch your destination on there. That way, people won't think you're a vagrant." Just don't let them see you scrounging around the Dumpster for said cardboard.
