HOODLYMS: Happenings at summer camp
By Courtney Vermaas
The arrival of over 30 ski and snowboard camps to Mt. Hood, Ore. marked the official start of summer skiing for 2006. Windells and Mt. Hood Summer Ski Camps are dominating the freestyle scene with their private parks and pro coaching staff.
Windells kicked off their summer in a big way with the Salomon Freestyle Team Camp, bringing in skiers like Simon Dumont, CR Johnson, Mike Douglas, Mark Abma, and Windells’ own Tommy Ellingson, Sammy Carlson, and Cody Ling. The 32 Salomon athletes that showed up threw down in the Windells park for nearly a week. The team also spent time in focus groups giving feedback to French product and marketing reps. Forty-seven skiers rolled into town for last week’s session, including six stylin’ ladies. Head freestyle coach Travis Erdmann lead the talented coaches, which included Ellingson, Carlson, Austin Stevens, Paul Yih, and Ike Smith. Grete Elliasen, Phil Belanger, and others are on their way.
Rage Films is in town shooting a segment with Kristi Leskinen and Plehouse is shooting with Charles Gagnier. Earlier in the season Matchstick Productions shot a 60-foot gap to rail landing with Mike Wilson. Scott USA is currently in town doing a major photo shoot with the likes of Tim Russell and Windells’ Brandon Becker.
New on the Windells campus this summer is a 12,000-foot indoor gravity training facility, the Dreamland concrete skate bowl, and expect to see an artificial surf wave in the near future. Windells is looking forward to the 300+ freestyle skiers they will have throughout the summer.
Mt. Hood Summer Ski Camp just wrapped up Session 4 with coaches Darren Owens, Dave Stearns, and Heavenly freestyle team rider Jay Panther. Tanner Rainville just arrived in town to coach sessions five and six. Rainville was a MHSSC camper back in his mogul days and worked as a digger for the camp.
MHSSC’s park has more flow this year and includes a triple-jump lineup with rail options in between. They are constantly adding new features, with a new fun box in the works right now. Campers are also getting up to some big mountain terrain above the Palmer glacier. Coaches recently took 12 kids on the hour hike to Crater Rock for some smooth corn snow. Some of the kids said it was the best run they’d ever skied.
Both camps are stoked on the mountain’s conditions. The massive snowfall this winter has left enough snow to last through the summer. For more information on the camps, visit www.windells.com or www.mthood.com.
