According to South American news reports, ski photographer Carl Skoog passed away on Monday, October 17 while attempting to ski the south wall of Mercedario, in the Argentine Andes. Mercedario, 22,211 feet, is the fourth tallest peak in the Andes.
The South American newspaper Diaro de Cuyo, using quotes from Skoog's climbing partner, Canadian Rene Crawshaw, reported on its website that Skoog hit a rock formation during a fall. As of Thursday, police were still attempting to recover his body.
According to the newspaper, Crawshaw told police the pair had successfully completed two ski descents in the area. The accident took place during their third run.
Based in Washington State, Skoog, 46, was a highly accomplished ski mountaineer who was involved in pioneering several routes, including a 2000 first descent, with Crawshaw, of Mount Baker’s North Ridge.
In addition to Powder, Carl’s work appeared in numerous ski publications, including commercial work for The North Face, Patagonia, Colorado Ski Country USA, Rossignol, K2,and Sierra Designs.
