New Name New Look

12/10/03

Whistler, Canada - SMS Summer Ski Camps, the largest skiing-only camps in North America, will have a new name and look this summer. Directed by two time Olympian John Smart, SMS runs freeride and moguls ski camps, as well as manufacturing an outerwear clothing line - SMS Clothing. Along with partner Mike Douglas, who heads up the freeride side, Smart decided that the camps and clothing should no longer share the same name. From now on the camps will be known as Momentum Ski Camps.

He explains, "With the increasing growth of the SMS Clothing brand we were experiencing conflicts with camp and coaches' sponsor relations, so we are re-launching the camp under a new name. I'm excited about the new name and direction, as it will allow our coaches to promote the camp more freely and expand our existing sponsorship opportunities."

Smart, who was recently inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, says, "Momentum may be a new name, but we have been in the summer ski camp business for the past 13 years and have built a solid reputation, as offering quality coaching, diverse terrain and one of the best camp atmosphere's out there. "

Douglas adds: "Momentum makes sense to us because we feel we've been gaining it since our humble beginnings back in 1991. Every year our camp gets better and our passion for the sport grows stronger. And every summer we see returning campers do the same. It's our mission to continue with this momentum and never settle for anything less."

One of the camp's new features will be a unique S-Coaster rail. Douglas says, "It's a 40 ft S-rail that rises up at the start, then goes lower in the middle, and then up at the end. This will be the coolest and most challenging feature we've ever installed."

Douglas has put together another star coaching team. "We've secured our tightest group of freeride coaches yet. Dave Crichton (a former SMS camper himself) and Boyd Easely will be joining the experienced crew, which includes Sarah Burke, Iannick B, Philou Poirier and many more."

Current and former World Cup skiers and Olympians make up the mogul coaching crew, including Toby Dawson, Shelley Robertson, Scott Bellavance and Ryan Johnson. Smart says, "The integration of new school with high speed mogul technique has never been more relevant and we are perfectly poised to fuse the two sides of the sport through our talented coaching staff, use of trampoline and water ramp and of course our on-snow terrain."

Momentum Ski Camps has some of the best terrain on the glacier, including 3 private lanes, a halfpipe, quarterpipe, variety of tabletops and rails and the best summer mogul lines in North America. Based at the Whistler Village Inn, in the heart of Whistler, close to the lifts and restaurants, the camp has its own private lodge along with pool, Jacuzzi, fitness center and pro-level trampoline. Momentum Ski Camps will operate from June 19, offering four weeks of freeride and mogul camps followed by two adult-only mogul sessions.
