PHOTO ANNUAL: Go get your copy!

For a different twist, in this year's Photo Annual we asked the contributing photographers to give us a little insight into what went into producing their pictures. The only shot in the gallery to not include these words also happens to be one of the most unique. The opening spread features a Will Wissman shot of Brant Moles. Here are a few words from Will to explain how this image came to be. To see more, pick up the 2006 Photo Annual, on news stands December 13.

Brant Moles Starscape
I have been brainstorming an image like this for a long time. I knew it was possible to combine the classic starscape image with action, I just needed the right place. This structure was ideal. With two street lights that would light the trees and building I knew I could get some detail. Waiting for the new moon was critical to insure the star trails popped. So I called Brant and explained that he would have to drop 15 feet off the structure with no moonlight and just minimal lighting for his landing. Any light on the take off could ruin the shot. And by the way "don't miss your grab." His reply was "is this even going to work?" All said and done we spent 6 hours from 10pm to 4am trying to get it done. I made 5 exposures that night, 3 of Brant. When I picked up the slides I was blown away. This was the best exposure of the night and like a true pro Brant had the grab, with some real style points to boot.
