Sundance Exhibition Series Announces A Photographic History of The 10th Mountain Division

02/20/04

Join us for a remarkable journey through time as Sundance presents this amazing collection of photographs that capture the essence and reality of WWII as experienced by the only American division specifically trained for mountain and winter warfare. This exhibition of extraordinary photographs will be on display in the Sundance Screening Room Gallery through March 31.

America's Skiing Soldiers: A Photographic History of The 10th Mountain Division exhibit is free and open to the public. The Screening Room Gallery will generally be accessible Monday through Saturday 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For specific viewing dates and times, please call the Sundance Activities desk at 801-223-4567. The Gallery is also available for private functions.

The photos, from a private collection by Robert Bishop, show the soldiers in training, combat, rest and relaxation. Some of the actual clothing and equipment used by members of the 10th Mountain Division are interspersed with the photographs in the Screening Room Gallery and are on loan from the Mark Miller Collection.

Opening Reception to Benefit Alf Engen Museum

To kick off this exhibition there will be an opening reception on February 28, at 7 p.m. in the Screening Room Gallery to benefit the Alf Engen Ski Museum. The Alf Engen Ski Museum, located at the Utah Olympic Park Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center in Park City, is a showplace for Intermountain winter sports history and distinguished contributors to the sport of skiing. The museum has evolved to become a world-class multi-purpose center featuring images and memorabilia from the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

The evening will begin with an hors d'oeuvres reception, followed by a screening of Fire on the Mountain, a 10th Mountain Division documentary that won the 1995 Telluride Mountain FilmFest Grand Prize and was a 1996 Sundance Film Festival Nominee. Cost of the reception, exhibit and film is $15.

Historian Flint Whitlock, who collaborated with Bishop on the book Soldiers on Skis: A Pictorial Memoir of the 10th Mountain Division, was recently commissioned by Sundance to write an essay on the 10th Mountain entitled America's Skiing Soldiers and will be present at the reception on February 28, 2004.

A premium ticket, for the February 28th event can be purchased for $150 and includes the reception, exhibit, a copy of the essay America's Skiing Soldiers and film screening, followed by dinner in the AAA Four-Diamond award-winning Tree Room. A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the Alf Engen Ski Museum. To purchase tickets, call the Sundance Activities Desk at 801-223-4567.
