Powder to the People 2003
Park City Goes Off
February 4th, 2003
by Dave Tokaruk

Logan riding the rail.

We rolled into Park City with some apprehension Saturday morning due to the lack of snow and a greybird overcast day, but we skied like it was our job, because, well, it is. When we got out onto the mountain we were stoked to find soft spring-like conditions and an amazing terrain park. We were amped because we had freshly tuned skis care of Mason and crew at Cole Sports. Although our bases were in perfect condition and our edges sharp as knives, we knew we couldn't blame our equipment as we were schooled by some of the young rippers we ran into. The two of us are by no means experts in the park, but luckily Logan and his posse of 12 year old groms were happy to show us around and demonstrate the skills they had honed in their Park City home. We all prayed for snow to come erase the ice and slush, then sessioned the park for a few more runs before we had to pack it in so that we could help host the free BBQ that Volkswagen supplied for us and the people of Park City.

When we finally got everything set up, a scene reminiscent of a tiger shark feeding frenzy ensued. We were more of less swarmed by young and old ski enthusiasts hungry for free burgers, hotdogs and a whole lot of swag that we were fortunate enough to be giving away. I eventually had to put the camera away to help out Gabe because it was looking as though he might be trampled if some of the pressure wasn't relieved. If all of this excitement wasn't enough, Melissa and Skip from Gore-Tex were set up right beside us raffling off jackets and gloves. The turn out was exceptional and the energy in the air was electric. It became clear to us that Park City can party and we hadn't even got to the main event at Cisero's yet.

Like bees to the hive.

After the insanity at the plaza we needed to chill out and grab a bite before the evening began. We stumbled upon O'Shuck's where we were delighted to discover that they had some of the best grub this side of Paris. In Gabe's words "that was the best damn burger I've ever had." Believe me that is high praise indeed, but O'Shuck's 1/2 pound bacon garlic cheeseburger is worthy of the hype. With a full stomach and a revitalized spirit we headed for Cisero's to set up.

This bar rocks! The staff is super friendly, the ambiance is warm and they have a killer sound system and dance floor. Everyone seemed more than entertained by the Powder Video Awards, the giveaways and the raffle, that raised money for Wasatch Backcountry Rescue. We were amazed at the participation of the crowd and the enthusiasm that seemed to ooze from the joint. When everything was said and done we turned the mic over to DJ Q-tip and he cleaned out everyone's ears with some slammin' beats and dance tracks. Gabe and I left feeling very satisfied, but all of that paled in comparison to the eighteen inch dump that started as soon as we filed out of the bar. We felt like we had truly brought the Powder to the People.
